Die Hayflick-Grenze (1961)

1961 wurde der Irrglaube widerlegt, dem auch eine Autorin wie Mathilde Ludendorff in "Wunder der Biologie" (1942/43) aufgesessen war, daß Zellen in Zellkultur ihre Unsterblichkeit wieder gewinnen würden:

“Like everyone else who did cell culture, I was persuaded to believe the 60-year-old dogma that when you culture cells, they have the capacity to divide forever. In practice, this never happened and people attributed their failure to ignorance of culturing methods, media formulation, and other things like the cleanliness of glassware.”
